Dr. David Fleiszer
Physician, Royal Victoria Hospital

Dr. Fleiszer is an Associate Professor of Surgery at McGill University, Faculty of Medicine, Director of the McGill Molson Medical Informatics Project, Director of the McGill University Health Center Patient Education Office, and former Co-Director of the Cedar’s Breast Center in the McGill University Health Center.  

Dr. Fleiszer completed both his undergraduate and graduate medical education at McGill University and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 2005 he was the recipient of the John Reudy Award for Innovation in Teaching, presented by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada.  That same year he was named to the Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence within McGill University, in recognition of his contribution to teaching and support for educational leadership and innovation in the field of medical informatics.  In 2011 Dr. Fleiszer received the MUHC Director General award in the physician category in recognition of his work in patient education. In 2014 he was recognized by the MUHC Department of Surgery and received the Outstanding Teacher Award.

He helped to establish the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Program and in that process became the President of the Trauma Association of Canada and Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He was the major force behind the conception and creation of the Cedars Breast Cancer Clinic and was the Director of that unit for many years. Currently his clinical activities are focused on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

As an undergraduate at McGill, Dr. Fleiszer was became the first McGill player to win the Hec Crighton trophy in 1969 as the most outstanding player in the nation. Fleiszer won the Forbes trophy in 1969-70 as the athlete who brought most credit to McGill. He was a two-time recipient of the Students' Society trophy as team MVP in 1968 and 1969. He still holds the McGill single-game rushing record with a 298-yard effort. That year, Fleiszer set a McGill and OQAA single-season rushing record with 925 yards in seven games. He won the OQAA scoring title in 1969 with 10 TDs in seven games. He scored 21 touchdowns over his McGill career, and held the team's all-time rushing record for 20 years with 2,177 yards on 373 carries.
