The Nick & Lynn Buoniconti CTE Research Fund
Prior to his death in 2019, Nick Buoniconti and his wife Lynn launched the Nick & Lynn Buoniconti CTE Research Fund. Nick, who was diagnosed with dementia, committed the final years of his life to fighting CTE for the thousands of others who will benefit from effective treatments and eventually a cure. A message from Lynn Buoniconti
My husband, Nick Buoniconti, valiantly fought his diagnosis of dementia. Over the final 5 years of his life, he developed serious neuromotor issues. We believe that this is the unfortunate result of the many years he so passionately played football.
Over his life, Nick gave so much to so many, whether it was the joy of watching him during his Pro Football Hall of Fame career, or crusading for his fellow players, or watching him clown around on HBO’s Inside the NFL, or playing golf with him, or the $450 million he has raised for spinal cord injury research, or simply being Undefeated Nick!
Recently published research found that 110 of 111 former NFL players who had their brains studied after death, including some close, personal friends, were diagnosed with CTE. We are on a journey to help advance CTE research so that others benefit from early detection and hopefully soon, effective treatments.
Nick was all in on fighting CTE, and he pledged to donate his brain upon his death to Dr. Ann McKee, telling the New York Times, “I owe it to the thousands of others who will follow me on this trek. My life is not what it was, and I just want to be able to help with Ann’s research and hopefully the research will end up helping so many other players.”
Dr. McKee is the world’s foremost expert on CTE, and over the last decade has revolutionized our understanding of the disease. We visited her lab at Boston University CTE Center and were so humbled by her knowledge, her passion and her commitment to solving this problem.
We have launched the Nick & Lynn Buoniconti CTE Research Fund through Boston University to raise funds for Dr. McKee’s crucial research.
